Superannuation and TPD Claims

TPD & Superannuation

Many people are often unaware that they may have Salary Continuance and/or Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) cover attached to their superannuation fund.

If you suffer an injury or illness (whether physical or psychological) that prevents you from ever returning to work again, TPD cover may entitle you to a lump sum financial payment. Super fund policies, however, TPD arrangements can vary greatly and whether an application for your TPD benefit is approved can also depend on whether you meet the definition as stated in your insurance policy, and the required waiting periods.

In order to determine whether you have TPD cover, you may check your membership statement, or call your super fund directly. If you are a member of more than one super fund, it is important to check which funds you are covered under.

An approved TPD payment can impact other financial benefits you are receiving. If you are in this position, you should seek independent financial advice on the effects of accessing your TPD benefit.
